This section is devoted to eco-landscapes for small lots, many of which are found in urban settings. These small areas may not allow space for a woodland planting or a wildflower
meadow but can certainly be turned into a beautiful and beneficial ecological planting. As more and more municipalities are contemplating by-laws to restrict the use of pesticides on residential properties (most of which are used on turf areas), why not consider naturalizing part or all of these landscapes as an alternative. This would be a tremendous boost for the environment in urban conditions and far more aesthetically pleasing than a weed infested lawn!
The greening of urban environments has more to do with the health and well being of residents than with creating a well balanced ecosystem. Our natural ecosystem is a complex association of plant and animal species that interact to sustain that balance. An urban environment cannot support that type of biodiversity. But many aspects of the natural environment can be applied to an urban area to make it a more hospitable place for all species that care to live there.
Mature trees in the urban landscape reduce heat levels by absorbing the sun's energy directly and shading buildings
and pavement that otherwise reflect and radiate heat back into the atmosphere. Native
fruit bearing shrubs and wildflowers will provide food and shelter for the many birds, bees and butterflies that inhabit the urban environment. Reducing the amount of turf that is grown in urban landscapes will reduce air, soil and water pollution and eliminate wasteful irrigation.
Naturalizing part or all of a small urban landscape requires detailed planning. Planting to scale is perhaps the most important consideration.
Selecting a tree that will eventually shade all of your yard and much of your neighbour's property, may not be what you had in mind. So always select plant material by mature size.
A wildflower meadow enriches a large property but will overwhelm a small area. Consider dividing your planting area into gardens and planting to scale - tall wildflowers and grasses to the back flowing into plantings of smaller and more delicate material to the foreground. Include paths for interest and ease of maintenance. A pond is an ideal focal point for a naturalized landscape and would provide an essential source of fresh water.
Naturalizing your small part of the urban landscape will hopefully entice others to do likewise. And perhaps these individual initiatives will persuade urban planners to adopt the greening of urban environments.
